The Local Motors-built car known as the “Rally Fighter” first appeared at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. It made history as the world’s first “co-created production car.”
What does that mean?
This rally racing car was the first vehicle to take an open-source approach to car manufacturing. It was the first model built by Local Motors.
An online community of gearheads and tech nerds put their heads together on the engineering and style of the car.
The group included Sangho Kim. His design won among tens of thousands of submissions.
Then, Local Motors uses a micro-factory to make the car. No two models are the same.
It’s rare to see a Local Motors car available for sale. But bidding on eBay Motors is now on for the 2013 Local Motors “Miss Behavin” G80 Rally Fighter.
Jay Leno’s Garage has featured the Rally Fighter. You can check out the episode here:
It has also appeared in movies like Transformers: Age of Extinction, and many Forza video games.
Local Motors has only built 100 cars or so. Local Motors guarantees exclusivity by limiting the production of its models to 2,000 units.
How much is a Local Motors Rally Fighter?
You can buy a brand new model for a cool $99,900. But, you need to be ready to take part in the six- to eight-week process at a Local Motors micro-factory.
No Parts Bin Left Untouched
Local Motors searched parts bins across the auto industry to build the Rally Fighter. The car drew inspiration from the P-51 Mustang fighter plane.
The engine is a mighty 6.2-liter LS3 E-ROD Chevrolet Performance V-8. It has factory specs of 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque.
Local Motors built this beast to fly. The FOX suspension system allows for an amazing amount of travel, 20 inch rear travel and 18 inches in the front.
The 2013 Local Motors Rally Fighter listed on eBay Motors has only 21,779 miles on the odometer.
Miss Velma P-51 Warbird-inspired livery wraps the body.
The beast rides on Method 301 Matte Black Alloys. They’re wrapped with HD Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac LT285/70R17 tires.
The interior has:
- MasterCraft Baja RS bucket seats
- A Clarion GPS head unit
- Factory air conditioning, power windows, and locks
Is the Rally Fighter street legal?
Although it’s made for off-road use, the car is street legal in all 50 states. It passes California’s strict emissions standards.
Since the creation of the Rally Fighter, Local Motors pivoted into large-scale 3D printing.
First, with the Strati—the world’s first 3D-printed car. And most recently with Olli, a self-driving electric shuttle vehicle.
But its open-source approach to car manufacturing started with the Rally Fighter.
The 2013 “Miss Behavin” G80 Rally Fighter is a great example of what’s possible when great minds try to transform the capabilities of a powerful off-road racer.
