How to Change Your Oil: Visual Step by Step Guide

Changing your oil is easier than you think. eBay Motors has everything you need to change your vehicle’s oil at home.

Step 1

Check owner’s manual for oil weight and capacity. Buy the oil and oil filter.

Step 2

Warm up the engine. Move the vehicle to sturdy jack stands or ramps.

Step 3

Now you’re ready to start changing your oil. Put the drain pan under the oil filter. Remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Empty the filter into the drain pan.

Step 4

Put the drain pan under the oil pan’s drain plug, remove the plug and drain the oil.

Step 5

Replace the drain plug. (Optional: Swap in a fresh washer.) Coat the new oil filter’s gasket with fresh oil and install the filter.

Step 6

Unscrew the oil filler cap and add the specified amount of oil using a funnel.

Step 7

Check the dipstick to make sure the oil level is correct. Replace the oil filler cap.

Start the engine and run until warm. Turn off the engine. Check the oil level again, to ensure you didn’t introduce any leaks while changing your own oil.

Step 8

Pour the old oil into a jug and take it to a recycling center. Your DIY oil change is complete!
